The Atlanta lode was discovered in 1864, but the remoteness of the area presented problems. The mills were closed in 1869, only to reopen in 1877. The area still preserved in Atlanta was constructed in the boom years of 1877-1884. The historic district is the only surviving section of the 19th century Atlanta and includes five houses, several outbuildings, a garage, a log cabin, an assay office and a jail.
