This striking Greek Revival style church was designed by Jesuit priest Anthony Ravalli and built by Coeur d’Alene Indians. The Mission of the Sacred Heart to the Coeur d’Alene was a thriving agricultural village, mission and way station for travelers across the Mullan Road for more than a quarter century. In 1876 a new mission was built at De Smet. The Jesuits then used the site as headquarters for the rocky Mountain Missions under Father Joseph Cataldo and built a Parish House in 1887 to train Jesuit Brothers. They abandoned the site in 1924, deeding it to the Diocese of Boise. In 1928 and again in 1974 local efforts brought the building back to life.
