St. Mary’s Catholic Church was designed and built in Gothic style defined by its pointed arches, buttresses, large windows, and tower. The stained glass windows were designed and crafted by a famous craftsman, Albert A. Gerlach. Mr. Gerlach, formerly of Giannini & Hilgart in Chicago, and trained at the Art Institute of Chicago, was hired by the Povey Brothers Art Glass Works Studio of Portland, Oregon. The Povey Brothers Studio was known as the “Tiffany of the Northwest”. It took 9 years for the stained glass windows to be completed. Mr. Gerlach painted and then fired the stained glass windows in traditional stained glass style. The windows depict Jesus and various saints and angels. |
