In 1999 the South Custer Historical Society and members of the White Knob Historical Preservation Committee came together to preserve historic mining structures associated with the Mine Hill behind Mackay. Through a combination of volunteer efforts, and a number of partners including the Idaho Heritage Trust, the National Park Service, the Bureau of Land Management and the U S Forest Service, the local group has stabilized the old Shay mining railroad trestle, the tramway towers, two historic cabins, provided signage for the Mackay Mine Hill Tour and are working to preserve other remnants of the hey day of mining in the Alder Creek Mining District.
