Warren C. King originally owned and operated the original 16 charcoal kilns that produced charcoal for the two massive blast furnaces of the Nicholia Smelter in upper Birch Creek. At peak operation, the kilns may have employed as many as 200 people to produce 2000 bushels of charcoal each day. The parabolic or “beehive” shaped kilns replaced the earlier method of producing charcoal in pits. Today, only four kilns and some rotting piles of cordwood remain. The town of Woodland, that was located just south of the kilns, has disappeared. The kilns are in the National Register of Historic Places.
