An early and permanent Ranger Station was first constructed in 1910 on the north bank of the Salmon river. In 1933, the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) camp constructed five new buildings at the Indianola Ranger Station. In addition to the historic significance of the site, a wildland firefighter memorial was constructed in the early 2000’s during its use as a USFS Helitack base. The memorial commemorates the lives of two firefighters, Jeff Allen and Shane Heath, who were killed in the Cramer fire. Following in the footsteps of the CCC, the Student Conservation Association, founded for the purposes of engaging youth in conservation efforts, will be housing seasonal AmeriCorps members at the Indianola Ranger Station and will be rehabilitating several of the historic structures.
